Saytek - Easily Influenced

Full Original Interview

Hi Saytek, you played at Suicide Circus some days ago. How was it? After Tresor, Sisyphos, Chalet, Watergate, Golden Gate … it has been your first appearance at Suicide? Which club could or should be next?

I have been very lucky with Berlin bookings! Whenever I do live shows here, they are totally packed and crazy with wonderful people dancing. My recent shows in the Hammerhall of Sisyphos, the Water Floor of Watergate and the main floor of Suicide Circus have all been so much fun. Each venue has its unique crowd and atmosphere. I debuted at both, Watergate and Suicide, this autumn. I am always honoured, when I get booked to play here. I think its quite unusual for a UK artist, to play so much in Berlin! As for the next show, I am still waiting to confirm a few things, so hopefully it will be announced soon!

You always play live, so I can imagine, there have to be some more preparations done before your performance, than before a DJ. Do you always do soundchecks? Have there ever been “critical problems” to be solved before a gig - or does it always work well. Is there any story to be told :-) ??

I have loads of kit and quite a complex set up, so it's always ideal if I do a sound check. It means, everything is prepared properly and we know everything is working. There is not always time to soundcheck though! The worst thing that happened recently is the sound engineer plugged me into the phono input of the DJ mixer. This is meant only for vinyl decks, so when I started playing, the sound was very distorted, but we fixed it quickly and the show was great!

Carl Cox is a very big fan of your music. He is not just only playing your tracks, he also invited you to remix “Let It Go” by Christopher Coe, the third release on their fresh “Awesome Soundwave” label. Release Number four is completely by you, your “Easily  Influenced” EP. How long did you work on your “Awesome Soundwaves” for them? What have been your “influences” or inspirations?

I am truly honoured, to have so much support from Carl Cox. He is a DJ who I grew up listening to, he has been a massive influence on me, he has been playing my music for a long time! When I heard, I was one of the first artists he thought of, when setting up his and Christopher Coe’s Awesome Soundwave label, which is especially for live artists, I was blown away! So to be working with them is great. Christopher, who runs the label with him, is a great artist and very easy to work with. The tracks are all produced live, like all my releases at the moment. Inspiration comes from many places: life, touring and listening to amazing music!

This summer Terry Francis & Lunacy Sound Division came up with their “Proper Gander” on your Cubism label. What is the mission here after more than ten years now?

Our mission at Cubism has always been, to release music we love, nothing more nothing less! Lunacy Sound Division in Mark Gwinnett, my label partner, and his collaboration with Terry made perfect sense to release on the label. Terry Francis is a legend to us and has always supported Saytek and Cubism Records at fabric. We host a Cubism room at fabric every year or two, so it's a great pleasure to release something from Terry on our label!

Your third album “Live Stories” has been released on Darren Emerson’s Detone this summer. What is your most memorable “Live Story”-Experience of 2018 so far? And what is coming next, after your “Easily  Influenced” EP on Awesome Soundwave?

For me its been such a good year for shows with bookings in Prague, London, Copenhagen, Dubrovnik, Warsaw, Liverpool, Llandudno, Magdeburg, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munster, and of course Berlin. I have met so many great people and played to so many amazing dance floors! I have also had lots of canceled flights, lost luggage and even got diverted to an airport 200 miles away from home, because of the snow. Its been a very memorable year and I love touring (most of the time!)
