This film is dedicated to African culture in Colombia as seen and told through the prism of music. Traditional rhythms revisit the past - their ancestors and the bonds with Africa- while modern music performed by young people returns us to the present: a multi-ethnical country full of contrasts and contradictions. Along the Colombian Caribbean coast, the African drums resound since colonial times. In the beginning, there was Cumbia and Bullerengue; rhythms from overseas brought by slaves. The strength of spirit led in turn to the proliferation of maroons, descendants of slaves who rebelled against their masters and escaped to their freedom. Palenque de San Basilio is one such freetown, founded in the 16th century. Here the SEXTETO TABALA ('drums of war' in Afrocolombian Creole) has been preserving the Palenquero sound for over five decades. But this is just the latest iteration of Palenquero tradition. A journey to its roots reveals an immensely rich musical traditions, pushing their way upwards into the branchings of modernity.
